TBP Friday Faves: Springtime Sprouts
Spring is in the air and we’re getting ready for our outdoor Farmer’s Market season.
We are lucky enough to have a sprout farmer at our market. She grows and sells a wide variety of beautiful, nutritious, and delicious sprouts.
But every now and then, I like to grow my own sprouts. Sprouting at home is affordable and it’s a fun activity to do with your kids – they love watching the sprouts grow quickly over a few days.
Sprouts are really high in antioxidants (especially Vitamin C) and they’re so versatile – eat them in a salad, on a sandwich, over stir-fry…my kids will even eat them by the handful and that makes me super happy!
Here are some sprouting how-to’s and some great recipes featuring sprouts.

Sprouts are something I really enjoy, but forget about. We even used to sprout seeds for our finches long, long ago. Thanks for the reminder, Maggie!
Oh, and our farmers market opens tomorrow–woohoo!
xo,

Hi Shirley – I would forget about them too, if it weren’t for the lovely sprout farmer at the market! I hope you get a chance to get to the market tomorrow!

We constantly have a rotation of mung bean sprouts going here! We love them and they go great in salads, fried rice and omelets!

Mmm, mung bean sprouts are awesome! Do you just sprout them from regular mung beans, or do you buy mung beans for sprouting? Does that make sense

Hi Maggie,
Great post! Sprouting lentils is fun and important on SCD, as they are so much easier to digest! I like to use in salads and dishes like black bean and lentil burgers…even in green smoothies.
Great sprouted recipes! Thanks for sharing.
Hope you’re having a great weekend Maggie.
Be Well,
–Amber

@Amber, Do you incorporate the sprouts right into the burger? And then cook them? I’d love to know more
Thanks Amber.
[Reply]
Hi Maggie,
Yes right in there, you could cook them…or dehydrate.

@Amber,
Awesome! Thanks Amber. I’m excited to try.

We use sprouts often because they are so easy to grow on our own. They are such an easy and healthy addition to so many things and my kids think they are really cool because they get to watch them evolve. LOL This is such a great post, Maggie! And I love all of the recipe ideas you included too. Love some of those ideas!

I sprouted lentils late last week and this weekend I have them with a broccoli slaw mix and the dressing was dijon mustard, olive oil and redwine vinegar…that were really good. First time I have had sprouted lentils and feel in love with them. In fact the husband liked them so much that he carried the salad to work with him. SCORE!
