Book Review: Sweet Freedom

Sweet Freedom by Ricki Heller cover

Are you one of those people who sometimes feels a little bit trapped by her love of sugar?

I am.

Sometimes I feel like I can’t go a day without something sweet.

Not to worry. Ricki Heller, the dynamo behind the amusing and informative site, Diet, Dessert and Dogs, has come to the rescue with her book, Sweet Freedom: Desserts You’ll Love without Wheat, Eggs, Dairy or Refined Sugar.

Ricki provides recipes for over 100 delicious treats that are free of refined sugar, but not free of sweet delight. As she writes, “With Sweet Freedom, I hope to prove that you can have your cake, and great health too!” And she does.

Although not every recipe is gluten-free (some call for spelt or other gluten-containing grains), many are. I easily adapted recipes by substituting gluten-free all-purpose baking mix for the spelt in a few recipes. In one that called for chia seeds, the Sugar-free Sugar Cookies, I didn’t even need to add a binder because the chia seeds held it all together!

Not only does Ricki provide yummy confections, she is a wealth of information about various sweeteners, flours and substitutions.

Since I have children at home, cookies are a mainstay for us.

We tried the Classic Peanut Butter Cookies. Because we’re a nut-free house, we substituted sunflower seed butter, and it worked like a dream.

We also enjoyed the Sugar-free Sugar Cookies. They are crispy and slightly lemony. I kept the chia seeds whole, and they added a bit of crunch.

The piece de resistance, was the Dark and Decadent Chocolate Pate. Totally grown-up tasting (though my kids also devoured it), and perfect served with fresh strawberries or other fruit. A little goes a long way, so you really feel indulgent, even when you don’t go overboard.

Kim, thank you so much for this stellar review! And I’m so glad you and the kids enjoyed the cookies (the sugar-free sugar cookies are one of my favorites). Just so your readers know, the Decadent Chocolate Pate recipe is on my blog, so if they want to try it out, they can! :D

@Ricki, your cookbook looks amazing, but am i wondering–if i’m grain-free right now, are there enough recipes in this cookbook to make it worth getting now or should i wait until my gut has healed to enjoy your wonderful treats?

    Ricki Heller Reply:

@Sarah, Thanks so much, Sarah! I just took a look through the book and there are 14 grain-free recipes in the book–3 cookies and the rest are either raw bars or puddings/toppings. Most of the recipes are baked goods. I’ll let you decide if there are enough grain-free recipes for you to feel it’s worth getting now, or waiting! :)
